Tom's
Orchard is nestled in the rolling hills of Fallbrook, San Diego County,
California. Fallbrook, a community of 45,000 persons, is directly East of
the Camp Pendelton Marine Base and approximately 13 miles from the Pacific
Ocean at an elevation varying from 500 to 1200 feet above sea level.
His orchard is located on a four and one-half acre
plot of land with 400 Macadamia trees, many of which are now 30 years old,
and an aggregate production near 20,000 pounds of nuts-in-shell annually.
Tom's orchard is the only undedicated research station
for Macadamia trees in the mainland USA. It has 38 varieties within the
400 trees growing here. Varieties from Australia, Hawaii, Israel, Costa
Rica, Mexico, and California are under examination.
Some of the trees grown here were rejects of the
Hawaiian Agricultural Experimental Station Research Orchard on the Island
of Hawaii. These trees have proven to be either good or satisfactory introductions
in Southern California and other countries.
The varieties grown here have more of the essential
oils of Macadamia (flavor) than any of the Hawaiian varieties, enjoy the
difference! |
